UFC 176 Officially Postponed, Aldo vs. Mendes to be Rescheduled

Following another injury prior to a title defense for UFC featherweight Jose Aldo, the upcoming UFC 176 has been postponed. Aldo (24-1), was set to rematch number one featherweight contender Chad Mendes (16-1) in the main event of UFC 176 on Aug. 2nd. announced the news.

There is no word on whether UFC 177 will undergo a change in its numbering or if the UFC will take similar actions from when they had to cancel their first event in their then-19-year history, UFC 151. That event was pulled when UFC light heavyweight champion, Jon Jones, turned down fights with potential replacements for Dan Henderson after he was removed from the card with injury.

Aldo’s injury is said to require just a few weeks of rehab and the bout with Mendes will be rescheduled, but no word as to when or on which event.

The UFC has told those who bought a ticket to attend UFC 176 have been directed to go back to their point of purchase to receive a refund. This news comes just a few hours after reported that a source had confirmed ticket sales upwards of $800,000 with three weeks left until the event.

Here is the statement from UFC on their official site:

The featherweight championship fight between Aldo and Mendes is expected to take place later this year and all other fights previously slated for UFC 176 are being rescheduled for upcoming cards.
