Jose Aldo Out Of UFC 176

UFC 176 just got a lot less awesome. UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo has pulled out of the main event against Chad Mendes due to an injury. The fight card is scheduled for August 2 at Los Angeles’ Staples Center.

There has been no statement as to the type of injury that Aldo has suffered nor any indication as to how long he will be sidelined.

Aldo and Mendes have met previously at UFC 142 with Aldo getting the victory via a first round TKO. Mendes has been waiting for a rematch since that loss and will have to wait longer. He has reeled off five straight wins since that defeat with four knockouts.

Aldo has won 17 straight fights stretching back to his days in the WEC. He has successfully defended his six times in the UFC,

The UFC has not stated who will be fighting in the UFC 176 main event. There doesn’t seem to be an opponent for Mendes that will bring in PPV buys so they might put together a whole new main event.

The co-main event for UFC 176 is Jacare Souza vs Gegard Mousasi which could be a good main event but doesn’t hold the cache of a title fight. The card also features Grau Maynard vs. Fabricio Camoes and Bethe Correia vs. Shayna Baszler.
