It has become a tradition that UFC end each year with a card that is designed to be big. Whether with big names or loaded with fights that UFC fans want to see, these cards are supposed to end the year with a bang.
But there are those times when the calendar intervenes and a year-end card actually begins a new year. It appears that UFC 182 will join UFC 108 and UFC 125 as such UFC cards.
UFC confirmed with MMA Junkie that because of Christmas falling on the Thursday before the final weekend of 2013, it was decided to move UFC 182 a week and schedule it for January 3, 2015.
The MGM Grand Garden Arena has hosted each UFC year-end show since 2008, and that tradition appears to be holding firm as the venue is expected to host UFC 182.
The card’s main event was announced a while ago and will be the title bout between upcoming The Ultimate Fighter coaches Anthony Pettis and Gilbert Melendez.
Pettis will be defending the UFC lightweight championship against Melendez, a fighter who nearly jumped to Bellator MMA before returning to UFC for a lot more money.
MMA Junkie also reported that Ronda Rousey is hoping to fight at UFC 182.
Rousey defended her UFC women’s bantamweight title on the year-end card of 2013 when she beat Miesha Tate. That bout helped push the buy number for that card (UFC 168) over one million buys.
