Bellator heavyweight fighter Blagoi Ivanov continued his amazing comeback after a near death experience just two years ago.
Ivanov headlined Friday’s Bellator 116 where he finished Lavar Johnson via choke in the first round. He now advances to the heavyweight tournament final where he will face Alexander Volkov.
It was just two years ago when Blagoi Ivanov was attacke coming out of a club and stabbed. The knife blade pierced his heart and doctors had to operate on him for six hours. They induced him into a coma in a last effort to save his life.
When he left the hospital, barely able to walk, Ivanov vowed that he would return to fighting. He made his return at Bellator 99 where he defeated Manny Lara via first round guillotine. He then proceeded to reel off three more victories (including Johnson).
He is now one win away from a title shot. The sports world is full of hyperbole but there is nothing short of miraculous when it comes to the comeback of Blagoi Ivanov. He has quickly become one of my favorite fighters. His heart and determination are amazing and inspiring.
There is a tendency in to world of sports to try to compare a real life event to some fictional story. Recently UFC fighter Patrick Cummins was dubbed “a real life Rocky” befor he was destroyed by Daniel Cormier. To my knowledge there is no movie of book that can be compared to the journey of Blagoi Ivanov. He is a one of a kind fighter.
It’s easy to say, “He won the moment he stepped back into the cage,” but he actually keeps winning fights.
Ivanov will have his hands full with Volkov in the tournament final but he seems to be getting better with each fight. If Blagoi Ivanov is able to advance and win the Bellator heavyweight title it will be a story book ending that could very well be made into a movie.
