There has been a lot of speculation that UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey will be fighting former MMA fighter Gina Carano. These rumors will not stop and they got a nice boost with the recent April Fools Day where everybody on social media tried to sell this story a real.
As of now this matchup is just a rumor and I hope it stays that way.
I understand that this fight makes so much sense for the UFC that they would be stupid not to make it happen. It would be a huge event. I can even see how they would promote it. It would be the original face of women’s MMA versus the new face of women’s MMA. Old lion versus new lion. It would be like Muhammad Ali versus Larry Holmes or Larry Holmes versus Mike Tyson. And as I recall it didn’t work out too well for the old lions in those fights.
As a fight fan this doesn’t make much sense. Carano has not fought in nearly five years. Her last fight was in August of 2009 against Cris Cyborg for the Strikeforce women’s 145 title. A fight she lost by TKO in the first round. There is no way that she can still compete at an elite level in MMA. We would be treated to another over-hyped women’s title fight that would end in another Ronda Rousey first round armbar.
This assuming that Gina Carano can make the 135 pound weight limit. I don’t think she can do it. There have been rumors that the fight would be a catchweight bout so Carano could come in at 145. If that is the case the fight that makes the most sense (and dollars) would be Rousey vs. Cyborg. That wight would break all boxoffice records and be a great fight as well.
Of course Dana White is dead set against it so that will never happen. But what about Holly Holm? That would be a better fight that Rousey-Carano. I would even submit that Cat Zingano would give Rousey a better fight than Gina Carano.
Having Gina Carano come back after a five year layoff and fight for a title would be an insulting cash grab by Dana White & Co. and I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s exactly what they did.
