At Bellator 112 Pat Curran regained the featherweight belt from the man he lost it to, Daniel Strauss. Curran won an exciting fight in the last few seconds of round five with a rear naked choke.
Many people wondered (myself included) id Straus would get an immediate rematch. During the post-fight press conference Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney disclosed who would face Pat Curran next.
The new champ will face Patricio Pitbull Freire, who won the season 9 tournament. Rebney also stated the Straus will face the winner of Pat Curran and Patricio Pitbull.
Curran and Pitbull have met before with Curran winning via split decision. Their upcoming fight should be a great one. Pitbull has a bit of a grudge against Curran since Pat received an immediate rematch with Straus. Pitbull thought he should be next in line. The good news is that he will finally get his shot at the title, even if it is a bit late.
There has been no date set for the fight and Rebney has stated that he doesn’t think it will be on the upcoming Bellator pay per view headlined by Alvarez-Chandler 3.
For his part, Daniel Straus will not have to re-enter the tournament. He will simply have to wait for the outcome of the fight to know who his next opponent is.
In a related story, Season 8 tournament winner Magomedrasul Khasbulaev is still having visa issues and cannot fight in the US or Canada. Because of this Bellator has been forced to pass him up for a title shot. There is no news on when he will fight again.
