UFC 170 was seemingly cursed from the beginning. I will not bore you with the laundry list of fighters who have dropped out of this card. Many fight fans that I have talked to are saying that UFC Fight Night 37 will wind up being a better card than UFC 170.
I somewhat disagree.
Sure, UFC 170 is not the juggernaut that Dana White & Co. thought it would be but there are still some very good fights on the card.
So I present to you, dear reader, 3.5 reasons (yes, three and a half) to tune in to UFC 170.
1. Rousey vs. McMann – Two undefeated Olympians going head to head is as rare as Nick Diaz missing a 4:20 session. Will Ronda Rousey leave UFC 170 with another arm for her collection? Can Sara McMann be the first woman to defeat Rousey and, thereby, restore order to the universe? If McMann can take the fight to the mat and utilize her ground and pound game she could pull off the upset of the year.
2. Daniel Cormier Is Really Mad – I have never seen DC this angry before a fight. Convicted felon and UFC rookie, Patrick Cummins, has stepped in for the injured Rashad Evans and has been talking all kinds of trash every chance he gets. Specifically, he has said that during training sessions he dominated Cormier so much that DC started to cry. Cormier seems dead set on ending Cummins UFC career before it even starts.
3. Jessica Eye – Sure, Jessica Eye may have failed a drug test but she is one of the best strikers in the women’s division. She loves to mix it up and could end the fight with one punch. Alexis Davis is ranked third in the division and this fight could produce the next challenger for Ronda Rousey.
3.5. Rory MacDonald – Will the real Rory MacDonald please stand up? He was supposed to be the next great thing from Canada but so far has disappointed. He needs a strong showing if he wants to contend for a title. Demian Maia has a solid submission game but is coming off a loss to Jake Shields back in October. The winner of this fight will become relevant in the welterweight division. The loser, not so much.
So there you have it, 3.5 reasons why you should throw down your hard earned money for UFC 170. This card may not be as stacked as others but there is some real value here. If this isn’t your cup of tea spend the $10 for UFC Fight Pass and check out Fight Night London. That should be a great card.
