Former UFC champion and current punchline, Tito Ortiz, has been charged with two counts of driving under the influence (DUI) stemming from his car crash earlier this month. According to police reports Ortiz blew a .12 on the breathalyzer. The legal limit in California is .08.
According to a report by TMZ, Ortiz could face up six months in jail if convicted. However, that is unlikely given that this is Tito Ortiz’s first offense. Likely he will be given probation, a fine and ordered to attend drug and alcohol education classes.
Ortiz was supposed to make his Bellator debut back in November at the promotion’s first ever pay per view show but he had to pull out due to a neck injury.
Tito Ortiz has had a difficult time since he left the UFC. There have been rumor that he is broke (which he denies), a very public breakup with wife Jenna Jameson, nagging injuries and now this. He may never step back into the cage because of his current neck injury. It has been reported that doctors say he is risking paralysis if he decides to fight again.
It’s tough to see an MMA legend like Tito Ortiz unravel like this but it happens to many professional athletes once they leave the sport. Hopefully this is the bottom for Ortiz and he can turn his life and career around. Even if he never fights again he can still contribute to the sport of MMA in a positive way.
Let’s hope everything works out for Tito Ortiz.
