Georges St. Pierre has made it official. In a conference call with UFC president Dana White, the UFC legend said he is taking a leave of absence and will relinquish his title in the process.
GSP said that he has had a long career and has been under tremendous pressure and needs some time away from the sport. He did leave the door open for a return sometime in the future although he did not give a timetable.
“I need this,” he said. “I need to have a normal life for a bit.”
For his part, Dana White seemed to accept St. Pierre’s decision and stepped back from his earlier comments that GSP “owed” it to the UFC and the fans to keep fighting.
GSP said he will keep training to keep himself in shape but continued to stress that he want to live a “normal life.”
For his part GSP never said the word retirement and stated that intends to come back. But even if he decides to never come back he has nothing to regret. He has been a great fighter and will surely be inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame. He has been a fantastic ambassador for the sport of MMA and has conducted himself with class and dignity.
We all hope to see him back in the Octagon in the future but if we don’t it was a great career and he gave us some of the greatest memories.
