When Quinton “Rampage” Jackson signed with Bellator, it was rumored that his teammate Cheick Kongo (18-8-2) signed with Bellator MMA as well. The rumor was false, but after some time past, it’s official. it was announced today that Cheick Kongo will be the newest addition to the Bellator MMA’s weak heavyweight division. The current champion is Alexander Volkov who has yet to defend his Bellator heavyweight strap. It was also added that Kongo will be a part of the season 9 heavyweight tournament. The date and opponent are all unknown, but it is rumored that his Bellator MMA debut may be as early as October.
Kongo is a very experienced heavyweight fighter, especially compared to many of the heavyweights on the current Bellator roster. Kongo has fought some of the best in the world throughout his career inside the octagon. Kongo went (1-2) in his final 3 UFC fights. Kongo’s most recent fight was a KO lost. The French kick boxer was knocked out in the very first round by Roy nelson at UFC 159: Jones vs. Sonnen on April 27th in Newark, New Jersey. After Kongo’s contract was up with the UFC, he was never resigned by the promotion, forcing him to move on.
